Question of the Day
In honor of Chicago's bustling street festival season, what are your favorite festival foods?
I'd love to see Chicago embrace a food truck that you could actually cook something fresh!
Festival food would be transformed.
We have been serving fest food at Northalsted Market Days for nearly ten years. Our struggle has been to offer the type of quality food we are known for while competing with the nomadic street food fried dough and brat guys. Their food is cheaply made, made of cheap ingredients and cheaply sold so a local restauranteur must really focus to represent their establishment on a sidewalk.
We were voted Best Food at Market Days (Chicago Free Press) for years until they stopped naming winners. Each year we take a page out of Dan's time in Maine and offer a classic roadside Lobster Roll. Fresh Lobster Meat, Crab, Mayo, Celery, Shredded Iceberg in a Hot Dog Bun. Perfect summer street food; easy to eat, lighter than the fried foods, filling, crunchy to pair with beer and DELICIOUS.
We're concerned that the cost of lobster this year may force us to switch our menu to a Bay Shrimp Roll but that remains to be seen (and who knows what to expect with the oil spill). For us to compete with the professional street vendor we have to be watchful of our retail cost. It's easy for people to opt for a cheap burger so that they're left with more beer money!
The Crispy skin Turkey legs that you had as a kid at different festivals, oh sooooo good!
I always had a soft spot for elephant ears. Also brats with kraut.

For me nothing beats the grilled corn or big turkey legs.
