Sommelier Certifications

Give us some insight on what outside parties wouldn't necessarily know. What are some public misconceptions about the sommelier certification process that you'd like to dispell?

First of all, a common misconception is that certification is a requirement for the job. This is not the case. Many excellent sommeliers go through no certification process at all, rather all research, palate development and service skills are "self-taught." These days, I find many of my colleagues are choosing to pursue various levels of certification through the Court of Master Sommeliers.

There are many levels of certification. At the intro level, the certification process is difficult but not impossible.
